Internships
The Latin America Working Group (LAWG) seeks interns year round to assist with our efforts to promote a just U.S. policy towards Latin America. LAWG is an ideal place to gain experience in advocacy work for any issue and provides a thorough introduction into how human rights and peace groups influence and shape U.S. foreign policy.
What You'll Do:
Interns are responsible for keeping up to date on Latin American issues, helping LAWG staff research and write blog posts read by grassroots advocates and congressional staff, attending meetings and congressional hearings, posting LAWG articles and action alerts to various social networking sites, and assisting LAWG's staff with daily and weekly projects. Interns work closely with the staff on a specific country campaign (Colombia, Cuba, or Mexico), doing what is necessary as it arises. The office functions at a fast pace but staff are friendly and helpful.
The internship is fairly flexible, so if there is a special project an intern would like to work on, he or she is encouraged to do so. Interns can work three to five days a week, with flexible hours. Dress is casual.
What You'll Gain:
A general understanding and interest in politics, economics, social issues, and human rights in Latin America; exposure to how the federal government works and how foreign policy is made; basic office skills; and skills in grassroots political organizing, especially through the internet.
