Thank You and Update on Ending Gun Violence

Today, President Obama unveiled an expansive plan to tackle gun violence.  For so many of us focused on ending the bloodshed that has devastated communities on both sides of the border, this is encouraging news.

We wanted to THANK YOU for adding YOUR voice to the groundswell calling for an end to gun violence.  Earlier this week, the petition that many of you signed urging President Obama to better enforce and tighten lax U.S. gun laws that traffickers exploit to get guns and smuggle them into Mexico was delivered to Vice President Biden’s task force on gun violence .  As you may recall, this is the same petition initiated by groups from Mexico’s Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity in partnership with LAWG and dozens of faith-based, human rights and anti-gun violence groups from both sides of the border.

Our Cuba program is at stake

LAWG_CUBA_SUPPORT_thumbSince the 1990’s the Latin America Working Group (LAWG) has been a go-to source for all questions regarding Cuba policy here on Capitol Hill for our activists across the nation (without the political wonkiness, of course). We’ve provided opportunities for you to take action and make your voice heard above all the other talking points that overload the halls of our government. Now, you have the opportunity to support us so we can continue to move our Cuba policy forward.

Will you show us your support so we can continue to support you?

Our Right to Justice is at Risk: Sign by Friday!

What happens when every other recourse you have to seek justice in your own country fails you?
If you are in the Americas, you turn to the Inter-American System of Human Rights (IAS). The IAS is the last iachrnewhope for justice for millions of people in the Americas. But, now what has come to be the last resort for millions of victims in their quest for justice is under threat by a number of governments that are seeking to weaken the IAS. The human rights activists, victims of violence and victims’ advocates with whom we work in Latin America every day need us to declare our support for the IAS.  Otherwise, what other independent institution will be able to demand accountability in countries where justice fails?

Lend your voice by declaring your support for the Inter-American System of Human Rights!

Missed Mexico's Caravan for Peace? Watch D.C. Highlights.

We were proud to join with YOU and so many partners and allies in hosting Mexico’s Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity here in our nation’s capitol last month.  Highlights of their 3-day stop in Washington, D.C. included a TV-camera crowded press conference on the steps of a Capitol Hill church and a ‘lobby day’ where teams of victims and advocates deployed all over Capitol Hill to tell their stories to individual members and congressional aides. The historic visit ended with a moving vigil and march through Columbia Heights to a final event in Malcolm X Park, a dramatic poetry reading by the Mexican poet Javier Sicilia, whose reaction to his son’s murder sparked the movement, and a stirring speech by the legendary farmworker union leader, Dolores Huerta.

Still Dreaming, but with Hope

You might remember this year’s theme for National Days of Action for Colombia was everyone deserves a place to call home. With over 5 million people forcefully displaced as a result of Colombia’s internal conflict, victims of violence are now hoping that the Colombian government will make good on its promise to help them return home, restoring their lands through the Victims’ and Land Restitution Law.

What Does Peace Mean to You?

Working for human rights in Colombia is no easy task. But, recent news from that war-torn country gives us hope. Last month, the Colombian government announced peace talks with the FARC, Colombia’s largest guerilla group, to negotiate an end to the five-decades-old conflict.   As the peace process begins next week on October 17th, we want to know: what does peace in Colombia mean to you?
