Temporary Protected Status Bills for Colombia

Bills to grant Colombians in the United States “Temporary Protected Status," which would allow Colombians to stay in the United States without fear of deportation, were introduced in the Senate by Senator Harry Reid (S. 986) in May 2003and in the House by Rep. Jim McGovern (H.R. 2853) in July 2003. The Senate will would provide TPS for one year while the House bill would cover two years. The bills urge this special status because of the level of political violence in Colombia. Otherwise, Colombians have to apply on a case-by-case basis for political asylum.

To support these bills, urge your senators and representative to cosponsor. You can reach your members of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and asking to be connected to your member's office.
