Days of Prayer and Action

Remembering the Victims and Rejoicing with the Peacemakers:
Days of Prayer & Action for Colombia
May 21 & 22, 2006

Celebrate the work of peacemakers in Colombia through solidarity and action! Come together with friends, activist groups and members of your congregation to demand that U.S. aid to Colombia support justice, human rights and positive alternatives for Colombians caught in the crossfire of this deadly conflict.

Take Action! On Monday, May 22, call your representative to ask him/her to vote YES on any amendment to the foreign aid bill that will transfer funds from military aid to humanitarian aid for Colombia, global HIV/AIDS or other positive development programs.

Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to be connected to your representative’s office. For talking points and a sample call script, go to http://peaceincolombia.org/actionday.htm, and for background information go to www.lawg.org/countries/colombia/explore.htm.

This day of action comes at a crucial point in the legislative year. The foreign aid bill, through which Plan Colombia is funded each year, is expected to be drafted in May and should reach the House floor for a vote in early June. We’ll be in touch with you throughout the next month to keep you posted on the contents and progress of the bill, and to let you know when the time is ripe to take additional action.

Along side the day of action, congregations and people of faith in the United States will join their partners in Colombia in prayer on Sunday, May 21, remembering those who have suffered in Colombia's armed conflict and celebrating their courageous dedication to creating a lasting peace with justice amidst enduring violence.
