Water Bottle Campaign

Direct Action: Message “on” a Bottle

Purpose: To bring strong support for border issues and comprehensive immigration reform to the attention of policymakers in a dramatic way that can also attract media and public attention.

Materials

Action:

  • Print the Border Working Group (BWG) sticker onto a page of 3.5 by 5 labels (Avery 5168). (the labels can also be printed on regular paper and taped to a water bottle). Note that each sticker has a different story, so spread them around.
  • Use an empty water bottle and remove the existing label. Affix the BWG label on the water bottle.
  • Mail a water bottle (in a box, of course) to each of your three congressional representatives. Be sure to pad the bottle with newspaper so that it survives the shipping!
  • Address the package to:
    Senator XXX
    Attn: Immigration Policy Aide
    U.S. Congress
    Washington, DC 20510

    Representative XXX
    Attn: Immigration Policy Aide
    U.S. Congress
    Washington, DC 20515
  • Be sure to include a note from you, with your name and address on it, so that your representatives can tie this action to a constituent.
  • The BWG’s audience is policymakers; therefore, the message on the label is fairly simple and specific. We are providing additional information on a flyer to accompany each empty water bottle. The flyer is double-sided, and two flyers can be printed from each file. Be sure to print your flyers double-sided. Include the flyer with the bottles you send.

Background
: This water bottle action is one of several activities that the Border Working Group (BWG) has coordinated in DC in order to raise awareness of and change policies on the border. Other specific activities have included Capitol Hill briefings and border deaths alerts to Congress. The BWG is a coalition of faith-centered and human rights groups based in Washington, DC. With partners on the border, the BWG comes together out of concern for and in solidarity with migrants and those who live within the U.S.-Mexico border areas. Through advocacy and education, the BWG works to see that the policies of the U.S. government toward all migrants are created out of a sense of compassion, respect for human rights, and an acknowledgment of the vital role migrants play in our economy and society.
