The Congress voted to "stop the clock"
on the Colombia FTA. As long as trade leaders are killed with impunity
and there is "so far to go" on human rights, LAWG will
oppose the agreement. Meanwhile, 63 members of Congress have sent
a letter to President Uribe about the recent wave of violence and
threats against human rights defenders.

May 15, 2008: House version of the
Iraq Supplemental bill includes a total of $400 million for Mexico
and $61.5 million for Central America, Dominican Republic and Haiti.
After weeks of uncertainty and waiting, the House version of the
Iraq Supplemental bill became available yesterday and is being debated
on the floor today. Although we still have yet to see the Senate
version of the bill, this gives us a clearer sense of the direction
that Congress may take with the Merida Initiative. Read
