Extrajudicial Executions

Senators Dodd (D-CT) and Feingold (D-WI) co-sponsored a dear colleague letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice expressing serious concern over extrajudicial executions by the Colombian army. The letter also calls on Secretary Rice to refrain from certifying U.S. military aid to Colombia until cases are investigated, tried in civilian courts, and those responsible are brought to justice. 14 senators, including the co-sponsors, signed the letter.

Senate Cuba Policy Review

A sign on letter initiated by Senators Baucus (D-MT) and Enzi (R-WY) to Secretary of State Rice calling for a complete review of Cuba policy following President Fidel Castro’s announcement that he would not run for re-election. “There is no magic U.S. policy that will transform Cuba. But with Cuba facing a period of change, we have a new opportunity to seize. Our policy based on sanctions, passivity, and waiting should end… We urge you to take a fresh look at our policy toward Cuba.”

S. 721
