LAWG Celebrates Supreme Court DACA Ruling, Victory for Immigrant Youth

Washington D.C.-The Latin America Working Group (LAWG) celebrates the Supreme Court 5-4 ruling announced today allowing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to stay in place. The ruling blocks the Trump Administration’s termination of the program in 2017 which the Supreme Court argues was unlawful and impacts more than 700,000 DACA recipients in the United States, allowing them to continue receiving their protections. It is a huge victory for DACA recipients and their families and a recognition of the tireless movement that immigrant youth have led for years.

LAWG will continue to stand with DACA recipients and their families in their fight to be recognized as permanent members of our communities. The administration should now restore the DACA program to its original state before termination. We urge Congress to act quickly and pass the bipartisan H.R. 6 American Dream and Protection Act allowing immigrant youth and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries to receive permanent protections and protect them from deportation.
