Each year, migrant rights centers and shelters in cities at Mexico’s northern border receive thousands of migrants, many of whom have been deported from the U.S. only hours earlier. These centers serve as an important refuge for migrants who find themselves in unknown or unsafe cities and vulnerable to targeted violence and exploitation by organized crime and unscrupulous authorities. These shelters and centers also provide a first line of assistance to the growing ranks of migrants who are forcibly separated from their U.S. citizen children through deportation, and who struggle to be reunited with their children.
At this event, speakers will present findings from a multi-year documentation initiative conducted by migrant rights center and shelters in cities across the U.S.-Mexico border. Their findings provide insight for the current immigration reform debate by shedding light on the real-life implications of immigration and border policy for migrants at the border, including family separation and how apprehension, detention, and deportation processes place migrants at a heightened risk of human and civil right violations by authorities on both sides of the border and by organized crime.
