As Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA) is being considered to serve as our next Secretary of Labor, the LAWG would like to salute Ms. Solis for her record of leadership in Congress to raise awareness and bring an end to brutal violence against women in Mexico and Guatemala.

As former co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, her initiatives brought national and international attention to bear on spiraling violence and unresolved murders of hundreds of women and girls in Ciudad Juárez and City of Chihuahua and urge Mexican authorities to end the impunity in countless cases of brutal violence against women in Mexico.

In 2003, Ms. Solis spearheaded a U.S. congressional delegation to the U.S.-Mexico border to speak firsthand with families seeking justice for their murdered or disappeared daughters, mothers and sisters.  In May of 2006, Rep. Solis and Sen. Bingaman (D-NM) sponsored a concurrent resolution that passed unanimously in both the House and Senate. This measure, the “Juárez Resolution,” officially condemned the disappearances and murders of women in Ciudad Juárez and the City of Chihuahua and expressed sympathy and solidarity with the victims’ families.  Additionally, this resolution urged the U.S. President and Secretary of State to recommend investigative and preventative efforts the Mexican Government must use to address the widespread violence.

In 2007, Rep. Solis sponsored House Resolution 100, a measure that called on the U.S. government to work collaboratively with Guatemalan authorities to resolve the murders of thousands of women and girls in recent years, as well as take steps to prevent further violence against women.   To hear Rep. Solis's floor speech on this resolution, click here.

We applaud Representative Solis’s devotion to human rights and her persistent advocacy to raise awareness and bring an end to this widespread violence against women.
