LAWG joins NGOs Calling for Independent Investigation into Mexican Government’s Spying on Human Rights Defenders, Journalists

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Today, the Latin America Working Group joins ten other international NGOs to express deep concern that the Mexican government spied on civil society organizations, journalists, opposition political parties, and international experts who have criticized the current administration.

The responses of the Mexican government have been insufficient to date. LAWG and signatories of the statement join the demands of Mexican civil society and some of the members of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) to create an independent panel of international experts. Members of this proposed group, unlike the national authorities, can carry out an investigation resulting in serious and credible results for victims of the spying and for the society in general. Likewise, we call on the Mexican government to make public the contracts and documents related to the acquisition and use of the software used for the spying.
