Stephen Coats, Labor Rights Advocate, Friend, You Will Be Missed

At the Latin America Working Group, we were so saddened to hear about the untimely death of Stephen Coats, the director of the U.S. Labor Education in the Americas Project (USLEAP), a participating organization in the Latin America Working Group

Steve was a pioneer in forging ways for U.S. citizens to support labor rights in Latin America and around the globe.  He contributed greatly to the protection of labor rights in Latin America, and helped to energize and focus the U.S. union movement, nongovernmental community, students and other sectors in standing firmly behind union struggles in other countries.  On an individual level, there are union members alive today who might not have survived without USLEAP’s dedicated work…

Steve was a good friend of mine, a dearly valued collaborator and a mentor.  Through him, I came to understand how our common international work could support and strengthen labor rights.  It was a real pleasure to work together with Steve Coats on many campaigns for justice.

Steve, we will miss you.  Our hearts go out to Steve’s family and other friends.
