It’s been more than a month since Berta Cáceres, the beloved Honduran indigenous, women’s, and environmental rights activist, was murdered in her own home. Since then, you’ve accompanied us every step of the way as we’ve honored Berta’s life and work and fought for justice in her case and an end to impunity for human rights violations in Honduras.

Berta Vigil

Tell Your Rep to Sign Letter Supporting IACHR involvement in an Independent International Investigation of Berta’s Murder

Together, we’ve reflected on moving stories about Berta, honored Berta on social media for International Women’s Day, stood in solidarity with Berta’s family in a DC vigil, and urged our representatives in the House to sign a letter in support of stopping human rights violations in Honduras. LAWG also took the lead in organizing an open letter to Secretary of State John Kerry with signatures from more than 250 organizations from around the world.

Now, it’s time to increase the pressure and urge the U.S. government to support the wishes of Berta’s family and colleagues for the Honduran government to approve an international independent group of experts to investigate Berta’s murder.

Representatives Norma J. Torres, Sam Farr, Janice D. Schakowsky, and James P. McGovern are currently circulating a dear colleague letter to Secretary of State John Kerry urging the State Department to ensure the active participation of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in the investigation of the murder of Berta Cáceres.

Berta’s family and colleagues have strongly emphasized the importance of having an independent international investigation of Cáceres’ murder with the involvement of the IACHR. Now’s our chance to support them!

Your representatives only have until Thursday, April 28th to sign on.

This important and timely letter emphasizes that the House of Representatives is “acutely aware that skepticism abounds regarding the willingness and capacity of Honduran authorities to carry out an effective investigation in this case” and urges for “robust IACHR involvement in the investigation of the Berta Cáceres case.”
