Join us in urging the new Secretary of Homeland Security to commit to humane and sensible border policy!
As you know, the former Secretary of Homeland Security during the Bush Administration made liberal use of the waiver authority granted in the REAL ID Act of 2005 to brush aside environmental and land management laws to speed construction of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Endangered Species Act –laws specifically designed to protect wildlife and natural habitats, as well as human health – were all waived aside with the flick of a pen.
This hasty construction of hundreds of miles of fencing along the border has destroyed decades of cooperation and preservation. We are concerned that continued use of such waivers will wreak irreparable environmental, cultural, and economic damage to border communities, treasured wildlands, and national parks. We encourage you to act now!
Please join us in urging our new Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, to put a stop to this senseless destruction of the natural environment and borderlands communities immediately — and instead, commit to reorient the Department of Homeland Security’s border strategies toward sensible and humane solutions.
