Instead of passing legislation that would protect the rights of border communities and migrants, or reform our broken immigration system, some members of Congress are once again trying to do the opposite. The misleadingly-named “Arizona Borderlands Protection and Preservation Act” (S. 750) is an extreme bill that would further militarize the U.S.-Mexico border and compromise environmental and human rights at the border. The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is set to mark up this bill starting today at 10am, so they need to hear from you NOW!
Can you take five minutes to tell the committee to OPPOSE S. 750 and harmful border legislation?
This bill represents an extreme and misguided “border-security first” approach that would strip existing environmental protections on all federal public lands in Arizona and worsen the already massive militarized buildup on the southwest border. Instead, border legislation from Congress should focus on increasing accountability for the corruption-plagued U.S. Customs and Border Protection, while building a workable, human solution for our broken immigration system. The Arizona Borderlands Protection and Preservation Act does no such thing.
Tell the Senate to reject S. 750’s enforcement-only approach that compromises border communities and environmental protections without providing any workable solution for our broken immigration system.
