Did you know that the Biden Administration STILL hasn’t issued #TPSforCentral America? Thanks to a lawsuit, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans, Salvadorans, and Nicaraguans has been extended through December 2022. But that’s less than four months away! Many TPS holders have lived and worked in the U.S. for decades. They are part of our communities. We can’t let these hard-working members of our communities lose their status and possibly be returned to countries that are no longer their homes!
What is TPS: Since the 1990s, citizens from El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua living in the United States have had Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a temporary humanitarian renewable relief program allowing them to work in the United States without fear of deportation. When countries are designated with TPS it means their home country is no longer safe and that there is an: ongoing armed conflict; natural disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions that make it impossible for a government to receive its citizens.
What is Happening Now?
The conditions for designating TPS for Guatemala and redesignating TPS for El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua are all there. More importantly, if these TPS designations are not made it means people will be forced to pick up their lives by the end of the year. Can you imagine the uncertainty and fear you would feel? In only four months, families will be forced to separate. No one benefits from forcing TPS beneficiaries to return to unsafe conditions.
The time to act is now!
That’s why we are joining thousands across the United States as part of the campaign demanding that the Biden Administration support TPS designations for Central America and for the dignity of the 1.6M Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, Hondurans, and Guatemalans to continue living and working in the United States without fear of deportation.
