International Civil Society Organizations Call on Honduran Government to End Abuses against Protesters and on the U.S. Government to Denounce Security Force Abuses in Honduras
Washington, D.C.—Today, a group of international civil society organizations released a joint statement urging the Honduran government immediately rein in its security forces and put an end to the excessive use of force against protesters. The statement also calls on the U.S. Department of State to “publicly [and] regularly denounce the abuses” perpetrated by the Juan Orlando Hernández government.
“The Honduran government must end these abuses now and respect the rights of its citizens to protest, defend rights, and report on the news. And I’d like to know: where is the voice of the U.S. Embassy when security forces kill teenagers and teachers?” asked Lisa Haugaard, executive director of the Latin America Working Group.
The statement also calls for the disbanding of the Military Police and the prompt investigation and prosecution of state agents responsible for the abuses against protesters, human rights defenders, and journalists, among others.

ONGs de la sociedad civil internacional instan al gobierno hondureño a poner fin a abusos contra protestantes y al gobierno estadounidense a denunciar los abusos de las fuerzas de seguridad en Honduras
Washington, D.C.—Un grupo de organizaciones de la sociedad civil internacional publicaron una declaración conjunta instando al gobierno hondureño a controlar de inmediato a sus fuerzas de seguridad y poner fin al uso excesivo de la fuerza contra los manifestantes. La declaración también hace un llamado al Departamento de Estado de los EE.UU. para que “denuncie regularmente y públicamente los abusos” perpetrados por el gobierno de Juan Orlando Hernández.
“El gobierno hondureño debe poner fin a estos abusos ahora y respetar los derechos de los ciudadanos a protestar, defender los derechos e informar sobre las noticias. Y me gustaría saber: ¿dónde está la voz de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos cuando las fuerzas de seguridad matan a adolescentes y maestros?” preguntó Lisa Haugaard, directora ejecutiva del Latin America Working Group (Grupo de Trabajo sobre asuntos de Latinoamérica).
La declaración también exige la disolución de la Policía Militar y la pronta investigación y enjuiciamiento de los agentes estatales responsables de los abusos contra manifestantes, defensores y defensoras de los derechos humanos y periodistas, entre otros.
