Washington, D.C.—Ahead of Mexico’s presidential, municipal, and congressional elections on Sunday, July 1st, the Latin America Working Group (LAWG) urges the Mexican government to ensure the conditions for a free and fair electoral process, including respect for the right to peaceful protest in the days thereafter.
“Mexico is suffering its worst human rights crisis in recent years. The elections on Sunday should not result in an increase in the violence and intimidation that already plague the country. Instead, individuals should feel safe casting their ballots as they choose. Beyond election day, the next government will face the enormous task of strengthening institutions to address the current cycle of impunity and corruption,” states Daniella Burgi-Palomino, Senior Associate for Mexico, Migrant Rights, and Border Issues.
According to official statistics, there are over 37,000 disappeared individuals in the country. While there are two new General Laws on Disappearances and Torture, their full implementation has been slow and lacked consultation with civil society and the families of the victims. Emblematic cases like that of the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students have not made significant progress almost four years later. Human rights defenders and journalists continue to face threats to their lives. Last year, 13 journalists were killed, and this year four have already been assassinated due to their work. Systemic corruption also drives the ongoing crisis of impunity.

Washington, D.C.—Antes de las elecciones presidenciales, municipales y del Congreso de México a llevarse a cabo este domingo, 1 de julio, el Grupo de Trabajo para Asuntos Latinoamericanos (LAWG por sus siglas en inglés) insta al gobierno mexicano a garantizar las condiciones para un proceso electoral libre y justo, incluyendo el respeto al derecho de protesta pacífica en los días posteriores a las elecciones.
“México está sufriendo su peor crisis de derechos humanos en años. Las elecciones del domingo no deberían dar lugar a un aumento de la violencia y la intimidación que ya afectan al país. Más allá del día de elecciones, el próximo gobierno tendrá la enorme tarea de fortalecer las instituciones para abordar el ciclo actual de impunidad y corrupción“, afirma Daniella Burgi-Palomino, coordinadora principal para México, derechos de los migrantes y asuntos fronterizos en LAWG.
Según las estadísticas oficiales, hay más de 37,000 personas desaparecidas en el país. Si bien hay dos nuevas leyes generales sobre desapariciones y tortura, su implementación ha sido lenta y el gobierno no ha tenido suficientes consultas con la sociedad civil y las familias de las víctimas. Casos emblemáticos como el de la desaparición de los 43 estudiantes de Ayotzinapa no han logrado avances significativos casi cuatro años después. Los/as defensores/as de los derechos humanos y los/as periodistas continúan enfrentando riesgos y amenazas a sus vidas. El año pasado fueron asesinados trece periodistas, y este año cuatro ya han sido asesinados por su trabajo. La corrupción sistémica también impulsa la crisis actual de impunidad.
