We’ve been feeling hopeful about this new administration’s commitment to immigrants and asylum seekers. And the truth is that there have been steps forward with the policy forcing migrants to remain in Mexico on its way to being terminated—and the new major immigration bill! But the reality is that our asylum system is still not fully restored. And it won’t be until expulsions stop from our border. Migrants and asylum seekers are still being flown to danger through deportations and expulsions without due process under the Title 42 order, the policy that the Trump Administration implemented which weaponized the pandemic to shut the border to all asylum seekers. Over 600 Haitian families, men, women, and children, were returned to Haiti this month alone. This is not acceptable. President Biden can and should end expulsions and deportations to countries that are still reeling from the pandemic, the impact of hurricanes, and political turmoil. We’ve been sounding the alarm, with you, about the harm the Title 42 expulsions inflict on migrants in our petition to President Biden. But unfortunately they are still happening. Lives are at stake.
