This is unacceptable. It was revealed last week that the Obama Administration is preparing a 30-day “surge” of raids to round up and deport Central American children and families who have arrived in the United States since 2014. These raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are an escalation of those announced at the beginning of this year and the ongoing enforcement actions targeting recently-arrived families.
We know that the growing humanitarian crisis of extreme violence, corruption, and poverty is driving tens of thousands of children and families to flee their homes in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The U.S. government has pledged to increase refugee screening in the region but continues increasing immigration enforcement at home and in Mexico in an attempt to deter migrants and refugees from reaching our southern border. Meanwhile, families say again and again that although the journey is hard and they will suffer abuses along the way, they will keep coming if it means a chance at protection and survival. And yet, those who make it to our border are greeted with detention and fast-track deportation rather than the due process they deserve.
We need to act before it´s too late to tell the Obama Administration that not only are these raids an ineffective response to the root causes driving children and families to flee their homes in Central America, but they are inhumane. Raids to deport these children and families back to the dangers they fled are not the answer.
