LAWG Responds to the Reintroduction of the Dream and Promise Act

Washington D.C.—The Latin America Working Group (LAWG) welcomes the reintroduction of The Dream and Promise Act (H.R.6) which passed the House in 2019 with bipartisan support. The bill would protect Dreamers and provide a pathway to citizenship for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) beneficiaries. LAWG has long advocated for a pathway to citizenship for these groups. This is a welcome first step in providing protection to members of our communities and the path towards the full reform of our immigration system.

In response LAWG co-director Daniella Burgi-Palomino stated: “The Dream and Promise has the potential to recognize TPS, DED and DACA beneficiaries for what they are —permanent members of our communities. This acknowledgement is long overdue and welcome. However, the bill’s current harmful provisions criminalizing people must be amended for it to fully recognize the human rights of our immigrant communities. We encourage the Congress to do better.”
